XVe Table Ronde sur le théâtre Tudor : Les formes du surnaturel – évolution, mutations.

Pour la XVe édition de cette manifestation ayant lieu le 7 et 8 septembre 2017 au CESR, il est proposé de nourrir, pour le champ anglais, la thématique de « Théâtre et spiritualité »  inscrite dans le programme de Scène européenne,  en abordant une problématique au cœur du sujet : les représentations ou évocations du surnaturel dans le théâtre anglais, considérées du Moyen Âge au XVIIe siècle.

Le sujet présente un intérêt particulier en ce qui concerne le théâtre anglais, étant donné l’impact de la Réforme initiée par Henri VIII, qui était à la fois politiquement absolue et, du point de vue de la doctrine et des institutions, notamment variable. En ce qui concerne le théâtre, d’une part, au cours du XVIe siècle les mystères et moralités médiévaux  disparaissaient, et malgré quelques éclats sporadiques d’un théâtre de propagande protestant, la mise en scène de personnages et de thèmes religieux devenait difficile, voire  impossible. D’autre part, une fois le théâtre public élisabéthain établi à partir des années 1570, plusieurs dramaturges trouvaient des moyens indirects  et novateurs de renouer avec ces traditions. Il s’agit donc d’identifier des points de rupture et de continuité à travers des pratiques dramaturgiques ayant trait à des questions à la fois de genre, de scénographie et de mentalité.
